Algo se cruza en las palabras al escavar bajo los pies

This new research project by Spanish artist Olga de Soto, who lives in Belgium, finds its origin in the maternity clinic of the French town of Elne, founded in 1939 by a young Swiss teacher and nurse and intended for Spanish women fleeing the Spanish Civil War. It reflects on the impact that the actions of one person can have on society, examines the oral transmission of family histories and mother tongue in a context of displacement. The form of this project does not lie in a fixed work, but in the movement it sets in motion, the stories it collects and the spaces for thought, imagination and memory that it opens.

NOTE: The title, Algo se cruza en las palabras al escavar bajo los pies, could be translated from Spanish as: something (or some thing) crosses through the words (or intersects with, or mingles among the words) when one digs lightly (or just beneath the surface) under our feet. The uncommon verb escavar, which means to dig lightly into the earth to loosen it or remove weeds, contrasts with the more common excavar, which means to excavate by removing material to create a cavity.
