Around All Saints’ Day, EUROPALIA brings our mourning rituals into dialogue with Spanish funerary traditions. After a first memorable encounter between Georgian polyphonies and European laments in 2023, EUROPALIA revives this format in Ostend, at the new Polderbos crematorium, and in Tournai, where an old lime kiln site has been converted into a memorial garden.
Rituales is an immersive outdoor performance that brings together burial rituals and sacred music from Spain and Europe in a sensory experience around farewell and connection.
The Spanish duo Tarta Relena explores traditional music from Spain and beyond. Soprano Lore Binon joins in, together with a local choir, to bring a new shared repertoire to life. Artist Sara Garcia Fernandez uses bread as a symbolic offering – to the Earth, to non-human beings and to those present.
